Environmental Guilt and Shame: religious challenges and opportunities walk-ins welcome. online registration is now closed. cost payable at the door by cash or check.
Please join us for a lecture with Sarah Fredericks, UChicago Assistant Professor of Environmental Ethics on environmental guilt and shame.
Feeling guilt or shame about one's contributions to environmental degradation is the subject of a considerable amount of popular environmental writing on blogs, in newspaper articles, and environmental memoirs. These experiences raise a number of ethical, philosophical, and religious questions. This presentation will focus upon two questions: What implications do environmental guilt and shame have for individuals, communities, and the larger environment? How can and should people respond to these emotions and the environmental degradation that catalyzes them? Fredericks will argue that environmental guilt and shame can catalyze and hinder pro-environmental behavior and so nuanced responses to them are needed. Rituals, whether longstanding rites from ancient religious traditions, or newly emerging responses to environmental degradation, can meet the challenges of environmental guilt and shame.
