Fight for Fifteen: the Pros, the Cons, and the Con
One of the on-going social, political and economic issues at the state and even municipal level in this country are the debates and periodic protests over raising the minimum wage over a given time period to $15/hour. (The current federal minimum is $7.25, though states and cities can establish a higher level – but not a lower one – for their own areas.) In our time together, UChicago economist Allen Sanderson will lay out the basic facts, economic theory, and misperceptions surrounding this public-policy initiative, discuss what other options we have that might address proponents’ goals without as much disruption in the industries and households affected, and offer what he thinks are the hidden agendas behind those advocating this change in labor markets.
