The Greatest Gift: Tax Savvy Rules
Michelle Gooze-Miller, Esq., JD'97 will present on tax rules for giving to friends and family.
It is more likely today than ever before that a woman will be in a position to make gifts to friends and family members. Widowed or single, nine out of ten women manage their own finances at some point in their lives. But with the increased ownership of assets in women’s hands, come attendant responsibilities. After all, as women, caring for others is not enough, we must have also have the necessary information to do so prudently. One area that can stand in the way of proper care taking is a lack of knowledge about the rules surrounding gifts to family and friends. Understanding gift tax can be enormously beneficial to woman who are doing the gifting as well as the receiver of the gift.
Michelle's presentation will address which gifts are considered taxable and the consequence of making those gifts, which very often is not the payment of a gift tax. It will look at gift-splitting between spouses which allows for increased annual gifting without the need to file a gift tax return, gifts between spouses, gifts to 529 college saving plans, gift tax returns, and the relationship between lifetime gifts and dispositions made at death.
