3Rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Bus Tour

Join the annual Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. bus tour, led by South Side activist and educator Timuel D. Black, AM'54.

During the day Timuel D. Black, AM'54,  who worked directly with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, will share his wonderful stories about Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement, particularly in relation to Chicago. Professor Black will be assisted by Bart Schultz, Senior Lecturer in the Humanities (Philosophy) and Director of the University of Chicago Civic Knowledge Project.
 

  • 8:30am-9:00am Refreshments and registration at the Center for Identity and Inclusion
  • 9:00am-9:45am Discussion with Timuel D. Black, AM'54 and Bart Schultz
  • 9:45am-12:30pm Bus tour with stops to RainbowPUSH Coalition, the Faith Community of St. Sabina, and other sites important to Dr. King's work and legacy.

timuel-black Timuel Black, AM'54 was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on December 7, 1918, but was raised in Chicago – a place he loves to call home. He is a revered and highly respected educator, political activist, community leader, oral historian and philosopher. After being drafted into the Army during World War II, Black returned to school and became a social worker. He has taught at a variety of high schools as well as colleges and universities. He is a pioneer in the independent black political movement and coined the phrase "plantation politics."  Black has spent his life furthering the cause of social justice.
