Hyde Park Book Group April 28 Meeting

Daughters of the Samurai: a Journey from East to West and Back by Janice P. Nimura (336 pages)

For our April 28, 2019 meeting, please join us at a new meeting place. We will discuss the nonfiction story of five daughters of the Samurai class who were sent to the U.S. in 1871. The girls, aged 6 through teenage, stayed 10 years to be educated in western schools and learn American language and customs so that they could bring western knowledge back to Japan. Nimura tells us about the Japanese family and training of each girl, her education and adjustment to school in the United States, and her return to Japan after so much of her life away.

Dan will lead the discussion.

We will meet at Piccolo Mondo at 1642 E. 56th Street in Chicago. Please notify Gerald Talsky if you plan to attend.

On May 26, 2019 we will be back at our usual location to discuss Monarchy of Fear: a Philosopher Looks at our Political Crisis by Martha Nussbaum (273 pages) led by Gerald.
