Hyde Park Book Group June 2 Meeting
The Monarchy of Fear: a Philosopher Looks at our Political Crisis by Martha Nussbaum (245 pages)
Because of Memorial Day weekend scheduling conflicts, we have moved our May meeting to June 2nd. It will be at our usual meeting place, the Sidney residence. We will discuss a timely book by Martha Nussbaum.
Martha C. Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago. In Monarchy, she focuses on the emotional basis of our current political crisis, and the use of political rhetoric. In the chapter "Anger, Child of Fear" she cites President Bush, who said "We are not at war with Islam" to calm inaccurate fears. She contrasts this with President Trump's use of the phrase "Muslim ban" and his references to "the West" and "our civilization." Trump's political rhetoric is used to stoke fear by creating a sense of large and unbounded danger.
Come join us in what should be a lively discussion. Gerry will lead.
We will return to our fourth Sunday schedule for our June 23 meeting, when we will discuss Can American Capitalism Survive? by Steven Pearlstein.
